Wyndham Clark pulled a 67 of five people to take a two -stroke advance in a first round of the wind from Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Shane Lowry is part of a group of players in an equal place after 69, a better than Rory McILroy and Justin got up one day when only 14 players broke by in Bay Hill.
Two late birdies raised the former Champion of the United States Clark at the top of the ranking. Lowry shared the advance on four sub-values after an eagle in 16, but he dropped a shot on the last.
He is tied with the American Captain of the Ryder Cup Keegan Bradley, the Canadian Corey Conners and Christiaan Bezuidenhout in South Africa.
McILroy also dropped the last one, after dropping a race on the opening hole. Between the two, he carded six birdies and two other Bogeys en route to a 70.
Rose joined him with two sub-values late during the day, also despite the opening with a Bogey and the addition of a double Bogey Six in the Ninth.
If Woo Kim, South Korea, Australian Cam Davis and the American Max Greserman also fired 70s, a better than the world number one Scottie Scheffler.
He was joined in One-Under-Par by his American compatriots Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay.
Xander Schauffeler suffered on his return from a rib injury, an opening of 77 threatening his series of 57 consecutive cuts.
“(I am) a little masochistic, I suppose,” said Schauffele. “I knew that I was going to come within a short time of what is a bit like a great installation of the championship around the Greens, and with the Greens Crusters, I really felt it more than anything else.”
