Rosie O’Donnell has decided to make a major life shift by moving to Ireland with her 12-year-old daughter, Dakota.
Rosie O’Donnell has revealed that she and her 12-year-old daughter, Dakota, made the decision to move to Ireland on January 15, 2025, just days before Donald Trump’s second presidential inauguration. O’Donnell shared the news in a heartfelt TikTok video, expressing her appreciation for the warm reception they’ve received in their new home.
In the video, she described her experience in Ireland as overwhelmingly positive, saying, “It’s been pretty wonderful, I have to say. The people are so loving, kind, and welcoming. I’m very grateful.”
Her decision to leave the United States was influenced by both personal and political factors. O’Donnell, who has long been vocal about her opposition to Trump, admitted that the political climate in the U.S. played a significant role in her choice to relocate. “It’s been heartbreaking to see what’s happening politically, and difficult for me personally,” she explained.
O’Donnell is also reconnecting with her Irish heritage as she works toward securing Irish citizenship, since her grandparents originally came from Ireland. Reflecting on her decision, she shared, “I never thought I’d move to another country. But after careful consideration, I decided this is what’s best for me and my 12-year-old daughter. And here we are.”
While she and Dakota are adjusting well to their new life, O’Donnell expressed that she misses her other children—Parker (29), Chelsea (27), Blake (24), and Vivienne (22)—who remain in the U.S. Despite the distance, O’Donnell emphasized that any future return to America would depend on significant changes in the political and societal landscape.
“We’ll consider coming back when it’s safe for all citizens to have equal rights,” she stated.
O’Donnell’s relocation reflects a larger trend of public figures choosing to leave the U.S. due to the political climate during and after Trump’s presidency. Similar moves have been made by other celebrities, such as Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, who relocated to the English countryside for comparable reasons.
In her closing message on TikTok, O’Donnell urged her followers to stay engaged and proactive in advocating for change. “Stand up, use your voice to protest, and demand that we follow the Constitution, not a king or a man, and that cruelty is not part of our governance,” she encouraged.
As O’Donnell and Dakota settle into their new life in Ireland, they continue to receive support from fans across the globe, many of whom admire O’Donnell’s courage and commitment to standing by her principles.
