Rob Key believes that the captain of England could “bring out the best” of Harry Brook, but insisted that there is no calendar on an appointment to replace Jos Buttler in the role.
The men of England are looking for a new white ball skipper after Buttler resigned following a disastrous champions trophy campaign, a third successive disappointment of the major tournament for the team.
Key, director of male cricket, currently assesses the role options in partnership with head coach Brendon McCullum, and insisted that “nothing is outside the table” with regard to the position.
A division of Captain Odi and T20 tasks, a role for the skipper of Test Ben Stokes and the appointment of a skipper from those outside the current team were all mentioned as possibilities by key as part of a wider reconstruction on one side which had trouble reaching the summit of the end that they reached under Eoin Morgan.
But Brook impressed when he filled buttler in an Odi series against Australia in the backend last summer, and would seem an obvious option for an elevation of the full -time role.
“I don’t know, to be honest,” Key said about the moment a new captain could be announced. “We will let the dust settle down and I will look at everything I can. It could be a few weeks, it could be a month, I don’t know.
“I think you are still cautious about everything, really, but these are the decisions you need to make. I think Harry Brook would be an exceptional captain, in fact. I was prudent that Ben Stokes do it and had too much, but look at how he left.
“I think he is the [England] Captain test with the best percentage of victories from Douglas Jardine. Everyone talks that we don’t win, but we have a test captain that did it.
“There is enough of the back. I think it could bring out the best of Harry Brook. Additional responsibility is sometimes the best thing for people. Sometimes this is not the case. This is what you have to train.
Buttler resigned after three years in the role. His mandate began brilliantly with a triumph of the T20 World Cup in Australia, but his personal performances have dropped while the form of England has decreased.
Key admitted that the outgoing captain may not have been set up to succeed, Stokes and the test team often taking priority because their fortune was transformed.
The 45 -year -old man expressed his confidence, which the ticket office would play and remain a key figure on the side.
Key said: “I think that, speaking to Jos, and the little songs I saw of him, he is absolutely determined to recover his shape and to be the striker that he is, helping us to win world cups.
“The 2027 World Cup is in South Africa, it is again a different style of cricket. It is out of the subcontinent and comes back to more than we are used to what you can go and play a style of cricket that suits us more.
“Jos Buttler is absolutely the key to succeeding, and I always believe that for the years to come, he can do it. He may come back to keep – anyway, is someone you build your team. »»
The prospect that Stokes assumes additional tasks during a huge year for the test team which includes series against India and Australia seems improbable, but Key thinks it would be stupid not to consider it as an option.
“Ben Stokes is one of the best captains I have ever seen,” he said. “It would be stupid not to look at it. It’s just the training effect of what it means.
“Are you just trying to find who is the best leader to advance this team? Who can manage this? Who will really drive it? Is leadership. It is an incredibly good tactician, that we have seen in the test cricket, but he is a leader of men.
“We don’t want to risk other things, but there is always a way in England to start watching:” What if it is wrong? ” ». Well, you should also think: “What if it’s okay?” “He said.
“These are the decisions I have to make. People surprise you, right? I think he was an exceptional leader and he likes to do the work. Well has a lot of energy for many things.”
