Sabrina Carpenter recently got real about writing her song Because I Liked a Boy, and it’s a moment that’s leaving fans emotional. While Sabrina is now a beloved figure, her journey hasn’t always been smooth. Back in 2021, she faced intense online criticism when rumour spread that she was the “blonde girl” referenced in Olivia Rodrigo’s hit song drivers license. This came after Sabrina reportedly began dating Joshua Basset shortly after his breakup with Olivia she is very sad in this situation
At the time, Sabrina stayed silent about the backlash, but she channel ed her feelings into her music. Because I Liked a Boy has often been seen as her response to the negative attention, and now, Sabrina has opened up about the emotional space she was in when she wrote the track.
Sabrina Carpenter took a moment to share a deeply personal experience with her audience: “I want to begin by saying that the song I just performed, the one you all sang along to so loudly that I could barely hear myself, was written during a very low point in my life. Back then, I never could have imagined that I’d be performing it for a crowd of 20,000, let alone 10 people.”
She went on to express her gratitude, adding, “Thank you so much. I’m feeling emotional right now, and I almost teared up, so this really means the world to me. It’s just so surreal.”
In Because I Liked a Boy, Sabrina belts out raw and powerful lyrics such as: “Now I’m a homewrecker, I’m a slut / I got death threats fillin’ up semi-trucks / Tell me who I am, guess I don’t have a choice / All because I liked a boy,” and “I’m a hot topic on your tongue / I’m a rebound get-tin’ ’round steal-in’ from the young.”
While the song didn’t make it onto the charts, it has garnered over 300 million streams and become a fan favourite, especially during Sabrina’s tours.
After the performance, one fan tweeted, “Her saying this after Because I Liked a Boy broke my heart,” reflecting the emotional impact of the moment.
In a 2022 interview , Sabrina shared the deeper meaning of the song: “Because I Liked a Boy really encapsulates a tough period in my life, and it expressed so much of what I had been wanting to say for a long time. The song is incredibly meaningful to me, and it’s been so rewarding to see how people around the world have connected with it. When I wrote it, I never thought it would resonate this deeply, and I’m truly grateful for that.”
