The Takele Takele of Ethiopia won the Tokyo marathon in a period of 2 hours 3 minutes 23 seconds on Sunday while the double Olympic champion of Uganda, Joshua Cheptgei, finished ninth.

Takele broke out with the peloton with about 4 km to go in warm conditions to win its first major marathon title, shaving a second on its previous personal record.

Deresa Geleta of Ethiopia finished second in 2:03:51, with the Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich of Kenya in 2:04:00.

“Time was not a problem, it was not too hot and for me it was comfortable,” said Takele.

“The course was good and it was a great day for me. In the future, I hope to run even better than today.”

The Sumen Asefa Kebede of Ethiopia defended its title in the women’s race, ending in 2:16:31.

Kenya Winfridah Moraa Moseti finished second in 2:16:56, with Hawi Feysa d’Ethiopia in 2:17:00.

CHEPTEGEI, which won gold at the two Olympic Games in Tokyo 5,000 m in 2021 and 10,000 m in Paris last year, ran its second marathon after having made its distance at the distance in Valence two years ago.

The 28 -year -old finished in 2:05:59.

“I am so grateful today that I came to Tokyo,” said Cheptgei.

“There are good positives to bring home and prepare for another step forward.”

CHEPTEGEI said he had trouble with non -seasonal Tokyo time, temperatures reaching 20 Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) at the end of the race.

“Anyway, I don’t complain,” said Ceptegei.

“I am really satisfied with the result and it can be an accumulation for next season.”

The bronze medalist of the Paris Olympic Games, Benson Kipruto, Kenya, tokyo champion last year, finished sixth in 2:05:46.

The former relaxation of the world record for women, Paula Radcliffe, who ran his first marathon in 10 years at the age of 51, finished at 2:57 a.m.

The British Radcliffe also plans to run the Boston marathon next month.
